Time to wonder..
posted Wednesday, April 28, 2004

In the last few weeks things have been slow, dried up. But a talented writer can make his own stories. So the other day our town was taken captive by pirates with light sabers. Oh I can't lie to you, that never really happened besides you're to smart for that.
Seems I've begun my own taxi business. My real job is to simply shuttle interested people from the coach buses to our hostel. If there isn't anyone interested and someone needs a ride to a different hostel that doesn't run a bus, I very ofter offer to give them a helping lift. To my surprise people have been giving me a generous tip after their free ride. I've never been one to turn down money if offered, therefore after 2 days that included 3 acts of kindness as well as 10 sneaky drunks that jumped in for a ride while my back was turned, I cleared $17 without once asking or expecting money. OK well I told the drunks to tip me. But other then that I'm reminded kindness does pay well.
Other jobs are getting better. I've slept in a few mornings, only been caught once. Still got my job though. He doesn't know about the seat belt ticket I got the other day either. $105. Self inflicted so I wasn't upset and I didn't create unwanted attention this time either. Third seat belt infraction in my life. I refuse to learn from it. I think as an adult we should have the choice to wear them since it doesn't hurt anyone but ourselves. Under 16, it should still be mandatory.
I finally ordered and picked up my new specs. Having to wear contact lenses for my 16hrs a day doesn't make my eyes feel to good and I'm told it's not healthy. I'm pretty blind without them. -4.75 is my prescription for anyone that understands that. Now that I've got a new pair worth $260 I'm so happy and relieved. That'll teach me to place them in such a safe place. So safe I never found them again.
I recently checked into the status of my applications for the 5 ski resorts I applied for during the first week of March. 3 emailed back with the same comments. "Your resume wasn't received" I can apply again but it'd be placed with the late applicants. Chances don't look so good anymore. On the brighter side of things, the sun is still shining, I wake up everyday healthy with a smile on my face.
I've had lots of time to wonder lately. What's the difference between a sucker and a lollipop? I think a lolly is shaped like a sphere, where a sucker is flat like a cookie only smaller.....Where does the word marshmallow come from? and why did Yankee doodle stick a feather in his hat and call it macaroni? One more thing, I noticed that in Toronto weather forecasters are such pessimists. A nice sunny day with a few clouds is often referred as 20% chance of rain. why couldn't' it be changed to 80% chance of sunshine? These are just a few things that I ponder....

For the answer to your first imponderables, I turn to Morris's Dictionary of Australian Words, Names, and Phrases - Currey O'Neil Ross Pty Ltd. Victoria 1898/1983 Sucker - n. name given in New Zealand to the fish Diplocrepis puniceus, Rich., family Gobiesocidae. This is a family of small, marine littoral fishes provided with a ventral disc, or adhesive apparatus. Other genera of the family occur in Australasia. Lolly, n. pl. Lollies - The English word lollipop is always shortened in Australia, and is the common word to the excluxion of others, e.g. sweets. Manufacturers of sweetmeats are termed Lolly-makers. Love all your bugs and animals and birds. We had 11 Blue Jays in line up today waiting in turn to eat, but watching your vibrant birds in your pics is great. Finding a frog on my toilet, well I guess that was quite the surprise. We only have ants coming in our house. lol
