Sea sick Pirates. posted Monday, March 29, 2004 I'm really enjoying the comments you've all been leaving. Gives me something to look forward to every week.
Finished my diving course. Took longer then anticipated, since the first course was canceled mid way through due to unsafe water conditions in Bundaburg. Completed the second half in equally murky waters off the coast of 1770. The town that rathered recognize the year it was discovered versus the man that stumbled upon it. The course is easy and straight forward, but if you were to walk into a room with absolutely no light source, you'd see more then I could in the water. With about 18 inches of visibility I lost my instructor many times and bumped into the ground enough times to fear the rocky dirt floor much more then sharks. I did see a fish though, that's only because he bumped into me. Next up an 8 hours bus ride to Airlie Beach for my 3 day party sailing cruise, navigating 75 tropical islands. Finally being able to dive in clear water.
April 1
12 people, 2 crew, One 40 foot sailboat. Together for 2 nights, 3 full days. Need more numbers? Only 12 Liters of wine, only 5 drinkers. Hard to compare with my Fraser island 4x4 trip. Hours of silence during days of sun and rain. Sailing with the stereo a blasting and the winds a blowing, meals were always prepared and ready for us after our daily snorkeling adventures. Loads of Coral with tons of vibrant fish. Tiny dime sized jellyfish floating around us is the reason we geared up from head to toe in stinger suits. My childhood fear of sailboats is the reason I wrote this while sitting alone below deck. The fierce winds and strong waves would capsize the tiny 'Laser' sailboats 10 years ago are why 45 degree angles don't excite me anymore. Although the last few days the weather may not have cooperated but the fish did. Shamefully there was no way I could capture every flavor in this new and exciting underwater world. No, I didn't see Nemo. I did see a baby shark however. Thought about it later and realized that maybe it wasn't a smart idea to chase it until I got a close enough for a good camera shot. I do it all for you, remember that. A few injuries did occur in the past couple days. Lots of stubbed toes, a few small stings and a painful extreme frisbee wound. After doing a double reverse twist flip with an inverted landing, I failed to notice the massive driftwood I was about to land on. After a little sympathy and some evening alcohol, the pain subsided, but gave me a new pain to think about come the morning. The last day arrived and the long journey home crept up on us quicker then the morning breakfast over the side of the boat. It's nice to feel the sturdy ground again.
BREAKING NEWS. I poked around town and ended up being hired for 2 jobs in half hour in Airlie Beach. First job will be delivering pizza for Dominoes on a moped. Second job with free accommodation is being a shuttle bus driver and pool boy for a local hostel, each paying a couple hundred a week. Keep posted in about a week to see what kind of troubles destructive Dwayne gets into.
