Bundaberg
posted Wednesday, March 24, 2004

Arrived in the fruit picking/agricultural town of Bundaberg. The very next day I was awarded with work, picking Zucchinis. Day 1, woke at 5am. Worked 12 hrs at $13.80/hr, Australia's adult min. wage. Day 2. Rained the night before, treading in ankle deep mud for only 6 hours. With every job, my unappreciated attitude is reintroduced. Even though the zucchini plants contained tiny prickles and irritated my arms and legs as if it was bad sun burn, it was soothing and almost kept my mind off the pain, striking through my back from constant bending and picking off the ground. Over the course of the day the physical disturbances faded away. Our boss was Italian. I've always known Italians for hard workers. He expected the 7 new guys of 3 days to be as quick as him and the other locals. Constantly telling us were too slow and not working efficient enough. Day 3, as promised was easier then the first two days, but was raining. With more nagging I could no longer tolerate his unachievable work ethics. I asked him, since he thinks our best should be the same as his best why he cant play basketball as good the man. Micheal Jordan. It seemed to go straight over his head. He continued to think we needed him more then he needed us. Everyone secretly agreed with my boisterous argument. One guy quit before days end. Later I quit. At the end of the 4th day, 3 more quit. Without workers to immediately fill the excruciating positions, I'm wondering if he'll ever realize maybe he's wrong. Back to being unemployed, in comparison, I'm thinking telemarketing won't be so bad. I suppose it depends on the QA manager or the supervisor.
I invested in a course today to receive my PADI scuba diving certificate. Suppose to be the cheapest anywhere on this continental island.
I saw a fish today flopping around on the floor of the pet shop, I smiled when I thought I saved his life. Not 10secs. later he was eaten by a bigger fish, the irony kills.
Getting very low on funds for the moment, but it always works out in the end. Everyday is a different experience. Bad or good, the day after is in the past and there's no reason to dwell on the past.

Hey Dwayne! I hate to say I told you so! (no, not really:) I said fruit picking was crap and that you were better off staying in Surfers! So, are you coming back then or what? ('-',)

Ha! The coffee is hillarious! A bit scary, but funny nonetheless. Too bad your zucchinni farmer experience didn't go well, but I love the quizzical question you put to your boss. Take good care of Mr Sad Zucchinni!

You made a pretty good wage, but quite hard on your back. Funny how they use the names of other stores to their liking. Glad to see and hear that your still alright and ready to go on to the next adventure. Happy Trails
