Friends Along the Way. posted Sunday, February 29, 2004
I've been once again reminded that I've been insensitive about not giving my good friends I've met, credit for adding flavor to my life here in Australia. Because I didn't include them in my journals about my adventures. A few have mentioned they're a tad insulted. I'll do my best to briefly describe anyone that I haven't mentioned, have had an impact on me and that I've known for more then a week and for a backpacker that's a long time. I have to start with my tour guide and friend Janine from Campbell river, BC. When I stepped off the plane in Sydney, she was waiting for me front row center. Without her direction at the gate I probably would've ended up on a shuttle bus that takes me to a military training camp or a Nemo look alike contest. During the next weeks, she worked a lot but we always found time to share our life dilemmas. In return for her good company I pampered her during our blue mountains camping trip, with all my luxury survival gear. We cooked our gourmet beans in cheesy sauce from the can, complimented by white wine from a box. Later the beans added an almost romantic fragrance to the tent.
May and Aaron are an international couple that I can't thank enough for letting my use their apartment for a place to rest my weary head. Aaron born in OZ, may born in Hong Kong but grew up in Toronto. Although I often had to wait in the lobby or wander town without a key to the flat, before I could enter when they finally came home from work, their hospitality will never be forgotten.
Pictures of Liz, are permanently etched in my retinas and for backup on CD. A short 2 week relationship in Sydney I thought at the time should be kept from the books. Why? Maybe because lust is blind and during the moment I would over zealously describe my friend. Liz from England taught me so much about the problems with friends that become too close, knowing that our days together as travelers were numbered. The weirdest thing she ever said was " I tried not to like you" only then to admit her travelers technique didn't work. During my time with her nothing could wipe the smile from my face. Except when I cried, but I was drunk and emotional. Still it was the best 2 weeks of 2004.
Here in Surfers since I knew I was here for more then a week, I would search for people that were staying awhile. Then I tried to move them all into my party dorm room. Andreas is German that tries very hard to keep up with English conversations. Great guy, clean cut until hes shirt comes off, that reveals very artistic tattoos from neck to waist without a bare patch of skin left on his back.
"Frenchy" left a comment Feb 12/04. Leo is his name from France, chose to stay in hostels to save money to buy a house. One problem is he doesn't know how to save. I'm his personal bookie. Fun to party with, since I charge him interest.
Siri from Norway is someone I really enjoy conversations with. Her lack of money resulting in minimal alcohol consumption makes sense why her conversations include knowledge instead of words like: huh, stoned, drunk or scored. She once said " So I hear you're the hostels ATM" I'm her bookie too.
The last person I have to give credit to, for keeping me from having any sober nights at all here at Surfers, Anette. She left a comment Feb 23/04. A witty Norwegian teen that loves attention almost as much as I do. The interesting part might be the lesson she might learn. Has a boyfriend of one week at home. Will be traveling for a total of 3 month. Meeting loads of weird, attractive people, but has vowed to remain faithful. Show the world, prove that it can be done. I'm not sure who will enjoy this entry more, the people who requested it or the regular readers. Hopefully both.
